I guess as long as you’re working in 2D and can use the default mass, coefficients of friction, coefficients of restitution, spring elasticity constants, etc. then this interface is fairly straightforward. When you get more real-life, then things are bound to get a lot more interesting.
That said, I take your point about making software interfaces more intuitive. I could have done with a tool like this when I was studying mechanics in high school. It brings the subject to life in an extraordinary way.
What is the software being demonstrated, incidentally?

This is a product from MIT. I think they call it ASSIST. Its an acronym for something clever. It uses a white board from Mimio to capture the input. You are right about it getting more complicated when you consider that there might be individual items in the box and coefficients could change based on many factors not considered (material, humidity, temperature, wear).
